Frequently Asked Questions
Georgia Tech has a hockey team?
Yes. Ice Hockey was established at Georgia Tech in 1973.
Is hockey a varsity sport at Georgia Tech?
No. There is no varsity hockey at GT. We operate as a student run sport club.
Who is eligible to play?
Rostered players must be full time Georgia Tech students taking a minimum of 12 hours per semester and in good academic standing. Faculty and staff are not eligible to play.
What are some cool things about sport clubs?
Like varsity sports, players get the pride of representing Georgia Tech and compete against other rival schools. We play in front of large crowds and sometimes in big name arenas. Unlike a varsity sport, you can have time to be involved in other clubs, organizations or the Greek system.
How is a sport club different from a varsity sport?
Financial, managerial, and promotional support from Georgia Tech are the main differences.
Sport Clubs are not part of the Athletic Association. Approximately 60% of our budget comes from the GT Student Government. The rest of our money comes from corporate sponsorships, merchandise sales, and player dues.
Our "front office management" consists of elected student members of the club and volunteer business managers.
Unlike varsity sports, Georgia Tech does not promote our organization as an entertainment entity. All marketing and promotional work is up to the elected student managers of the club.
Tickets, how much are they and where do I get them?
Most games are free and there are no tickets, simply show up at game time and find a seat. The University of Georgia will sometimes charge an admission fee around $2 when they are hosting, but there are not limited tickets. Additionally, games played in Savannah during the Memorial Hockey Classic require tickets. These can be found on the city of Savannah's website or through our website.
Do you have a coaching staff?
Yes. We have a group of coaches are very knowledgeable about the game.
Can I join the team for the 2nd half of the season?
Yes. Players can join the roster at the beginning of either the Fall or Winter semester. Prospective new players must have at least a 2.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours. Academic standing must be verified by the registrar. For more information, please contact a team coach or team officer.
How many games do you play?
Approximately 30 League games. Approximately 3 non-conference and exhibition games. If we qualify for the post season that can mean 3 or more games in the ACHA National Tournament. In all we play between 30-35 games.
When does your season start and how long does it last?
Regular weekly practices begin either the 2nd or 3rd week of class. The first game is around the end of September. We have December off, then continue from the beginning of January to the 1st week in March. Thus our season runs from mid August to the start of March.
I would like to tryout for the team. When is that and how does it work?
During either the 1st or 2nd week of fall semester we will have a meeting on campus for returning and new interested players. Anyone interested is invited. At the meeting we will introduce everyone and give information about the team. At that time, the 1st practice (tryout) will be announced. If you would like to play the best thing to do is fill out our online player recruiting form and contact the team President and Head Coach early.
What is ACHA?
The American Collegiate Hockey Association has 3 divisions. Georgia Tech participates in division III. The ACHA is to club hockey as the NCAA is to varsity sports. It is the governing body for most competitive college conferences and provides national ranking and a post season tournament.
Where do you play home games?
Home games for the 2010-2011 season are mostly at the Ice Forum in Kennesaw. Some are also at The Ice in Cumming. Please see the schedule page for more information.
How are sport clubs different from intramurals?
Intramurals at Georgia Tech do not play against other schools and do not travel. Sport Clubs typically play other colleges and universities like traditional varsity sports.
Do you give athletic scholarships for hockey?
No. We are not sanctioned by the Athletic Association of Georgia Tech and thus have no money to give to players. It would also be in violation of sport club policy and ACHA regulations.
What colleges and universities do you play against?
The majority of our opponents are from ACC and SEC schools. Feel free to check out the schedule.
I played hockey a lot as a kid, but have not played in several years. Should I bother trying to make the team?
Some current roster players have tried and succeeded at that. Most of the current players have been playing ice hockey for many years, however it is foolish to rule out athletic prowess and personal will. So if you are a competitor, give it a shot.
I have been playing roller hockey for many years, but have never played ice hockey. Is it possible for me to make the team?
Some current roster players have done exactly that. Work hard and it can be done.
There are no upcoming scheduled games.
