Georgia Tech Hockey started the 2011-2012 season with an impressive 11-3 win over the Auburn Tigers on Sunday. The game was played before a large crowd of Auburn fans at the Tigers home rink in Columbus, GA. The Yellow Jackets were able to eliminate the influence of the crowd early in the game and come out with an impressive victory. The game remained close throughout the first period as both teams came out very strong. The Jackets were the first on the board with a goal by Warren Shenk 6:59 into the first period. The Tigers struck back though 13:56 into the period with a goal by Seth Kestner. Neither team was able to take control of the game as the period ended in a 1-1 tie.
Period two saw the Jackets pull away from the Tigers as they netted 4 goals in the second, while the Tigers were only able to find their way on the scoreboard once. The Jackets saw goals from Alan Dagesse and Zack Berry along with rookies Kenny McCrary and Ryan Krusko.
The third period was a continuation of the second as the Jackets continued to build upon their large lead. A number of Tech players found the net throughout the final period including Nick Galli, Matthew Zaske, and Andy Cryan. Freshman Kenny McCrary's goal with only two minutes left in the game sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets and polished off his first collegiate hat trick. Final score was GT 11 and Auburn 3.
Tech Goalie Michael Klein turned away 26 shots and was solid in goal in his first collegiate start.
