Five years after his passing, Greg Stathis (photo) continues to inspire the ACHA community and others involved in hockey.
Stathis, who was reared on hockey in his native Staten Island, N.Y., and as the longtime head coach of the Division III club team at Georgia Tech helped stimulate the growth of non-varsity hockey not only at GT but throughout the South, will be honored again at the ACHA’s annual meeting May 2-5 in Naples, Fla.
The 2013 ACHA Men’s Division III Greg Stathis Coach of the Year Award will be presented to Brendan Sheehan, who guided the Iowa State Cyclones to first place in the West Conference of the Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Silver Division and their second consecutive national tournament berth.
On April 20, former NHL players Tom Lysiak and Don Bouchard were among about 80 golfers who participated in the Third Annual Greg Stathis Memorial Golf Tournament in suburban Atlanta.
Last summer, the Cherokee (County) Recreation and Parks Authority honored Stathis by renaming its in-line roller hockey rink in Woodstock, Ga., the Greg Stathis Memorial Rink. The hockey enthusiast was part of the investment group that built the rink.
Also at that time, the Cherokee Hockey In-Line League (CHILL) was formed and committed itself to “carrying on Greg’s passion for making hockey accessible to everyone who wanted to play.”
